Good classroom acoustics is a pre-requisite for LEED certification in educational facilities. The LEED acoustics requirements for core-learning spaces (primarily classrooms) are: control of reverberation, sufficient sound isolation, control of noise from the environment and from mechanical heating and ventilation systems.

Acoustic Dimensions worked with EI Associates to meet these requirements through design and construction. Our work began with a thorough inspection of existing conditions in the school including environmental noise measurements. We then assisted the architect on the selection of materials to control reverberation and the design of partitions for sound isolation.

We worked with the architect and mechanical engineers to design a sufficiently quiet HVAC system and inspected the building during construction for compliance with the design. Once construction was completed, we documented conditions in and around the finished building and confirmed with the US Green Building Council the project’s compliance with the LEED acoustics requirements. Our work, along with the rest of the design team, resulted in LEED Gold certification for the Selinsgrove Elementary School.
