University of Tennessee
Music Building
Knoxville, Tennessee
Project Type: New Construction
Seat Count: 700
Opening: 2011
Construction Cost: $23 Million
Architect: Associated Music Center Architects
AD Scope: Acoustics
The long awaited music building at University of Tennessee Knoxville is well underway with an anticipated opening in the Fall of 2011. It will be home to both students and faculty as well as to performing artists visiting the University. Two performance spaces are at the centerpiece of the facility; a 700 seat Opera House/Concert Hall (Phase II) and a 225-seat recital hall for student and faculty recitals and chamber music performances. A full compliment of rehearsal rooms, practice rooms, music labs, offices and support spaces will also be housed in the music building. The building will be home to the WJ Julian Marching Band Rehearsal Room.
The acoustics of the Recital Hall will be adjustable to support the wide range of music genres including jazz, acoustic recitals, choral and instrumental chamber music, etc. The performance platform is large enough to accommodate the largest anticipated chamber ensembles, and yet includes scaling devices that provide for a more appropriate environment for solo recitals.
The building footprint is limited, owing to a fairly restricted site. As a result, the building has multiple levels, adding to the challenge of achieving adequate sound isolation between the many acoustically critical performance, rehearsal and practice spaces within the building. The building will be constructed of multiple independent building structures.
