Acoustic Dimensions worked with the Omsk Philharmonic Society on the renovation of the Philharmonic Concert Hall located in the center of the city of Omsk, Siberia. The Omsk Philharmonic boasts a wide variety of programs with an active symphony orchestra, the Omsk State Ensemble of Russian Folk Singing and Dancing, a chamber orchestra, jazz ensembles and a children's philharmonic.
With this renovation we identified a radical and innovative approach that retained the existing walls, roof trusses and roof so as to retain best value, time-advantage and weather protection from the existing structure. The design-to-completion period of 7 months over the Siberian winter was only possible because we retained the existing roof. Within the box formed by the walls and roof, we demolished the steeply-raked main floor and excavated a shallow basement for under-seat ventilation. An entirely new concert platform and audience chamber was formed within the original walls and roof. These were shaped using reverse-fan wall geometry with inclined walls to ensure the early lateral reflected sound is free from audience grazing attenuation.
The hall has adjustable acoustics for rehearsals and for performances with amplified music, while the Omsk Folk Choir has performed in the the hall without amplification.
