South Plains College’s Texan Dome has recently undergone a major renovation designed to bring the 41-year old facility into the 21st Century. A new lobby, roof, windows, sound system, lighting and a catwalk have been added as part of the renovation.
South Plains College has a thriving Sound Technology and Live Sound program which engaged in collaboration with AD during design and system optimization. Students and faculty from the programs provided insight to best meet the needs of the Texan Dome and entire campus and engaged at a high level during system optimization and equalization. Teaching and learning opportunities were plentiful during system optimization and final EQ. The Texan Dome floor is seated during Commencement Ceremonies and several other key events each year. An early concept for floor coverage was an exploded mono cluster above the scoreboard. During the collaborative discussions it became clear that a solution utilizing a portable system was more cost efficient because the system could be used to support the major Texan Dome events, a wide variety of other events around the campus, and as a tool for class instruction. A portable system was designed with flexibility and ease of use as primary criteria. Captive looms and logical labels were used throughout the portable system cabling to simplify and expedite system setup while allowing flexibility in venues around campus.
Acoustic Dimensions provided bid documentation, assisted the client with evaluation of bids and oversight of the installation, and EQ and optimization of the installed systems. The majority of events in the dome are related to basketball and seat people in the fixed and bleached style bowl seating.
