In anticipation of a new pipe organ installation, Holy Trinity commissioned an acoustical study for the purpose of exploring potential opportunities to improve the acoustics of their church for both the pipe organ and their music program. Additionally, a similar study of the sound and lighting systems was requested. In the case of the sound system, it is possible that even if the existing system provides intelligible speech, the intelligibility may be compromised if the acoustics become more reverberant in support of congregational participation, the music program and the new pipe organ.
Our study found that a significant increase in reverberation was feasible by replacing the sound absorptive ceiling with a solid sound reflective ceiling. Maximizing the level of reverberation would provide support of congregational singing, a high priority for the church, as well as better support of the music program, including the pipe organ. This increase in reverberation necessitated replacement of the sound system. Our study provided recommendations for a new sound system, along with cost estimates. Acoustic Dimensions also arranged for a demonstration of the new speaker system for them to evaluate, prior to purchasing the new sound system. Recommendations for upgrades in the acoustics, sound and lighting system was a coordinated effort, providing the church with great value for more cost effective solutions to their renovation.
