When AD was hired to design the sound system and provide acoustics consulting for the new multipurpose room for Saddleback one of the first considerations was the priority of its music ministry. Worship styles in Saddleback’s services may vary from rock to orchestra to jazz, and it isn’t unusual at all to hear a gospel choir number in the same service as a country and western style tune.
Acoustically, the biggest challenge was the glass that ran floor to ceiling on both side walls in the cube-shaped room. Although the view through the windows was beautiful, the glass worked against the objectives for desired sound. AD developed a system of moveable side panels that could be left open to accent the view or pulled into place to enhance sound clarity. A series of angled panels were installed at the rear of the room to ground sound energy to the audience.
Another design solution was the inclusion of many delay speakers in the system focused down on the seating area in an effort to keep energy off the walls.
